Titan Travel has compiled a list of the best food cities, first collecting the 30 most visited cities in the world through World Atlas data. (The findings noted that neither Medina nor Mecca were included on the list “due to lack of non-religious tourism.”) It then collated the number of kid-friendly, vegan, vegan, and fine dining restaurants using Tripadvisor and the number of different cuisines to find the cities with the most diverse cuisines. The study also collected the number of Michelin-starred restaurants in each town through the Michelin Guide.
It then standardized each city to give a score of 10. It then broke down the findings into the top food attractions, the cities with the best food, the cities with the most plant-based restaurants, and the cities with the most diverse cuisines.
After studying this information, the team ranked Tokyo as the most diverse city.
“Tokyo, Japan’s busiest capital, boasts the world’s richest cuisine with a score of 8.67 out of 10,” according to the survey results. “The most popular cuisines in the city are Chinese (5,459 items per square kilometer) and Italian (4,852 items per square kilometer).” And, as Titan notes, while the city offers plenty of global cuisine, visitors should dig deep into some local favorites, “like Edo tempura, ramen, and sushi, to name a few.”
As for the overall ranking of the world’s best food cities, Paris took that honor. “Paris has long been regarded as the gastronomic capital of Europe and the world,” the results said. “Paris tops the list with a near-perfect score of 9.93, with more fine restaurants (6.75 per square kilometer) and Michelin-starred restaurants (4.65 per square kilometer) than any other city.” The results also revealed that Paris is home to some of the world’s “most luxurious” restaurants, including Guy Savoy’s restaurant at La Monnaie de Paris. It was followed by Denpasar, Indonesia; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; New York City, London; and Las Vegas, ranked 10th.
