Japan’s new program to test tourism has started, so now might be the time to think about a luxurious train ride back to Japan. Your night train trip to one of Japan’s most beautiful islands is about to get an upgrade.
In April, Kyushu Railway Co.’s luxury sleeper car Seven Stars announced plans to upgrade its already spectacular trains. The new, improved train will enter service in October 2022. It currently operates on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.
To ensure better passenger service, the rail company will revamp its luxury sleeper service, including reducing the number of guests who board at a time. In a statement, the company revealed that the upgrade plan will reduce the number of rooms from 14 to 10 and set the maximum passenger capacity per ride at 20 people.
In addition to reducing the number of rooms, the Seven Star Hotel will add a new tea room and salon so guests can get more stretch on the train.
According to the Japan Shimbun, this is the first renovation of the Seven Star train since its operation in 2013. Outside the new tea room, the dining area, located initially in the first and second cars, is now only in the first car. There, guests will enjoy seasonal meals prepared by the train’s chef. The second car will also be transformed into a gorgeous salon, allowing guests to move smoothly between dinner and drinks. The third carriage, formerly one of the passenger cabins, will now feature a casual bar next to an upscale shop filled with crafts and goods from Kyushu.
The train’s interior harks back to a slower, more magical time of travel, thanks to its use of rich dark wood, luxurious fabrics, and soft lighting that seems to sway with the subtle movement of the train. Its huge picture Windows allow guests to enjoy magnificent views from every seat. Alternatively, guests can return to their rooms, which have the same vintage style as the rest of the train but include modern amenities with private bathrooms.
Trains offer one, two, three, and four-night packages. Once the upgrade is complete, prices start at $5,085 (650,000 yen) per passenger for one night.
