While tourists flock to Mediterranean hot spots like Santorini and Capri, these sun-seekers overlook the region’s less obvious vacation spots, such as the fantastic island of Cyprus.

Initially settled by Mycenaean Greeks, this island nation offers archaeological sites, delicious traditional cuisine, and stunning scenery. More than just an outstanding summer season, it enjoys consistently pleasant weather and more than 300 days of sunshine yearly. That means plenty of time to sunbathe on the beach, swim in clear water, and go on scenic hikes. Plus, the low-key status of this low-key gem means fewer crowds and lower prices (yes, even in the summer).

Read on for advice from local experts on planning the perfect trip to Cyprus.

Best Hotels & Resorts

Parklane, Luxury Resort & Spa, Limassol

A favorite of discerning travelers, Parklane, a luxury congregate resort and spa in Limassol, offers a range of accommodations—from rooms to suites to luxury villas—plus tons of amenities. When you stay in a hotel, the most challenging decision you have to make is whether to relax in the outdoor pool or on the beach.

The Anassa Hotel

The Anassa Hotel exudes the ambiance of a resort thanks to its tranquil hillside setting, expansive vistas, and secluded beach. The spa offers an indoor pool surrounded by Roman Columns, a sauna, a steam bath, and serenity-inducing signature treatments. Not only is it a great place to relax, but it is also a great place for romance, making it an excellent choice for couples on vacation or honeymoon.

Columbia Beach Resorts

Columbia Beach Resort, a member of the world’s small luxury hotels, combines many of Cyprus’s most charming aspects. Nestled on the beach overlooking Missouri Bay, the 5-star hotel showcases traditional Cypriot architecture, an infinity pool, fine dining, and a wonderful spa.

Amara

In the coastal enclave of Agios Tychon, Amara feels like the backdrop for a fabulous holiday. With two award-winning upscale restaurants – Matsuhisa and Ristorante Locatelli – exclusive suites with private pools, sea views, and a sublime spa, it’s almost impossible to leave.

The Almyra Hotel

The Almira Hotel is a contemporary boutique resort spread across eight acres of gardens on the Paphos coast. It is tailored for couples and welcomes families with open arms. However, parents may want to book a babysitter and enjoy the ocean ritual at the spa.

The best thing

Archaeological site of Curion

Curion was once a thriving city-kingdom, and its archaeological remains, built on hills overlooking the valley of Kuris, still impress centuries later. “Highlights include the magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheater—now used for open-air music and theatre performances during the warmer months—private villas with intricate Mosaic floors and a bathing center,” says Froso Patsali, head of the concierge at Parklane, a luxury Limassol resort.

The Rock of Aphrodite

“Legend has it that Aphrodite was born in the foam of Petra Tou Romiou, commonly known as Aphrodite’s Rock,” says Sirin Suha, ToursByLocals Cyprus guide. “This area is not only full of mythology but also lovely and is a popular tourist attraction.”

Kykkos Monastery

“Situated in the mountains of the Malassa Valley, the Monastery of Chikos, founded at the end of the 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Alexius I and dedicated to Panagia (the Virgin Mary), is one of the richest and most photogenic religious sites on the island,” Passalli explains. Visitors can admire the stone carvings, arches, and frescoes and sip Zivania, the right place for pumice brandy production in Cyprus.

Nissi Beach

While Cyprus boasts many beautiful beaches, Nisi Beach in Ayia Napa resembles a postcard with crystal clear waters and white sand. Due to the pleasant climate, visitors can swim, sunbathe, stroll along the coast, and enjoy sunset cocktails in the many lively bars and restaurants almost all year round.

Troodos Mountain

The Trodos Mountains are known for their charming villages and UNESCO-listed painted churches. The region also has several wineries that have preserved centuries of viticultural tradition. Tip: If you plan to do some touring and wine tasting, arrange your transportation for the day in advance.

Best restaurant

Meze Tavern

One of the most popular restaurants in Limassol, Meze Taverna is a small, family-run restaurant whose traditional dishes follow recipes handed down from generation to generation and are well received by diners. It is also a special place to experience Cypriot hospitality.

Pyxida Fish Tavern

What could be better than fresh fish, a crisp glass of local white wine, and a view of the Limassol marina? Not much, and that’s precisely what you’d expect when dining at Pyxida Fish Tavern. The bright and airy space and professional service are also worthy of attention.

Estiatorio Evroulla

Tucked away in Nicosia – a complex city and the world’s last divided capital – is a casual restaurant, Estiatorio Evroulla, that serves some of the island’s best, simple local food (think: kebabs, Greek salads, and crisp French fries), all at reasonable prices. This is the perfect place for a quick, easy, affordable lunch.

Laona Restaurant

The Old Na Restaurant is a little treasure of the old town of Paphos. Tables in the bistro line the cobblestone walkway, and passersby have a front-row view of homemade Cypriot dishes, such as rabbit stifado and moussaka, which customers gorge on for lunch and dinner.

Estia

When you’re strolling along the pier in Paphos for a memorable dinner, head to Estia(or better yet, have the foresight to book in advance). The menu is dominated by traditional Greek cuisine, with octopus and chicken skewers, pita bread, and tzatziki as highlights of some homemade treats.

The best time to visit

Cyprus is a tourist destination all year round. Still, it is worth noting that tourism (such as temperature) spikes in the summer. Consider traveling in May, June, September, or October to avoid the heat and crowds. You will experience the wonder of swimming in the clear, blue waters of the Mediterranean and many hiking and biking trails.

How to get there

Travelers can fly to Paphos International Airport or Larnaca International Airport. From the United States, they must change planes through larger European hubs like London or Munich.

How to Get Around

It’s easy to rent a car at the airport and drive to explore at your leisure. Visitors who prefer organizing tours or private transfers will easily find many options.
