Let’s be clear: there is never a “bad” time to travel to Europe. However, there are also times when it makes more economic sense. That is shoulder season on the African continent.
Shoulder season travel is the “Goldilocks” period around the peak travel season. During this time, travelers can usually find excellent deals on flights and accommodation and much smaller crowds. This is a great time for travelers to explore Europe like a local.
“We’ve seen tremendous demand from Americans for European travel this summer, but even before the pandemic, Europe was historically a favorite summer vacation destination for many,” Katie Nastrow, Going’s travel expert, told Travel + Leisure. “The peak summer travel in Europe means people take advantage of the warmer weather and higher prices. However, shoulder season is a magical time when you can experience the area’s splendor with fewer people, mild weather, and for less.”
Nastero pointed to southern Spain, which sees an influx of tourists throughout the summer. However, Nastrow says you can still experience a summer-like beach getaway in the area in late September or early October. “It’s also a better time to take advantage of attractions, as the queues are shorter and the waiting weather is better than the cold off-season,” Nastrow added.
In addition, Nastero points out that most major European cities are great for exploring in autumn, as “the heat of summer won’t suffocate you, but places where you can get out into nature and explore the changing seasons are also worth considering.”
Want to know where to go this one-shoulder season? Here are five spots scattered across the continent that will allow you to vacation during shoulder season.
Lisbon, Portugal
In terms of tourism, Lisbon does have a real moment in the sun, and with good reason. The capital is home to top-notch boutique hotels, historic sites, and some of the country’s most delicious pastries (we’re looking at you, powder). Its shoulder season runs from March to May. From September to early November, you’ll find great airfare deals. Eventually, you can book some of the hottest hotels, such as the Four Seasons Ritz.
Not bad, France
Are you looking for a luxury European seaside vacation for less? Book a trip to Nice, France, during shoulder season. Located on the French Riviera, this beautiful town is a haven for those who want to relax in the crystal-clear waters of gin. Of course, its natural beauty attracts hordes of tourists during the summer months, making accommodation and space scarce. However, you can still visit this quaint neighborhood in September or October, when temperatures are relatively mild, in the mid-70s.
Venice, Italy
Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the European continent, receiving around 5.5 million visitors annually. It’s a busy place, but thanks to its historic canals and world-class museums, it still belongs on your must-visit list. To avoid the crush of tourists in peak season, you can visit this Italian town during the shoulder season from March to May or September to November. That way, you’ll have a canal to yourself.
Munich, Germany
In Munich, you can see centuries-old buildings, enjoy delicious Bavarian food, and sample some of the best beer in the world. The city is widespread thanks to its famous Christmas market, especially during Oktoberfest and festivals. But it’s also an excellent place for shoulder season trips for those who want to get a closer look at the city. Plan a trip to the capital of Bavaria in the spring from March to June, or after the Oktoberfest in mid-October, to get the best prices.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is the best destination for those who want to see and experience everything in Europe. The city has about everything to offer, including beautiful beaches, fantastic architecture, and delicious food, all in one compact city. While summer tends to be hot, its shoulder season, April-May and September-October, still offers warm temperatures and easier access to famous attractions such as Sagrada Familia and Casa Milum.
